It was a dramatic opening sprint race of the 2026 season in Buriram as Pedro Acosta claimed his maiden victory in the premier class after a controversial penalty was handed to Marc Marquez. The dramatic race saw
pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi crash out of the lead on Lap 2, leaving Ducati's Marc Marquez and KTM's Pedro Acosta to battle for the win.
After several overtakes between the pair, it seemed Acosta had a slight pace advantage. However, Marquez launched a huge divebomb at the final corner with 3 laps remaning - a move which saw him recieved a -1 place penalty on the final lap.
The decision handed victory back to Acosta on the last corner, with Marquez finishing second ahead of Trackhouse Racing's Raul Fernandez.
Following the race, Marquez sarcastically applauded the FIM stewards as he rode past, but was very calm and composed in his post-race interview.
"It’s a classic block pass.[...] I didn’t expect the penalty, honestly. But when you get one, you have to accept it." He told the media.
Despite being the championship favorite for the season, Marquez has seemed slightly under the weather throughout the weekend. Despite this, he
qualified on the front row and will start the main race tomorrow from second place.
