Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli surprised even himself with victory from P19 at the Italian GP. The 20-year-old started at the back of the grid following an engine penalty but pulled off a sensational drive to become the first Italian winner at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti for Ferrari in 1966.

Making up a remarkable 18 places in 18 laps after Charles Leclerc's Lap 2 crash at Parabolica, and getting into a 'yo-yo' battle with teammate George Russell halfway through the race, the Italian then took advantage of a Lap 28 Virtual Safety Car and pitted for a second set of mediums, eventually making his way past Russell on Lap 50 of 53.

Now 66 points at the top of the Drivers' standings, Antonelli said: "Unbelievable! I am so happy and I could have never imagined to be here today. But we managed to pull it off and I'm really, really happy."

In his late pursuit of Russell, the young Italian slid onto the gravel after crossing broken up tarmac at Turn 2, but that was not enough to stop him from taking a historic win.

On that brief scare, Antonelli added: "It was quite scary there in the moment. The tarmac was breaking up but I still thought I could do the corner. But once I went over a bit of gravel as well I went straight and I was like 'maybe I lost my chance'. But luckily we still had the pace and managed to bring it home."

Lewis Hamilton has been critical of both Ferrari and teammate Charles Leclerc's handling of the Italian GP, and has now called for Mercedes-like 'rules of engagement'.

The Briton was forced onto the gravel on the opening lap at Monza following a Turn 1 skirmish with his teammate, losing positions as a result, before Leclerc's heavy crash a lap later. Hamilton ultimately finished P6 at Ferrari's home race, struggling for grip throughout the 53 laps, with both McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finishing ahead of him.

Following Antonelli's sensational victory at Monza, Hamilton now sits 76 points behind the Italian in the Drivers' title, Ferrari also now trail the Silver Arrows by 122 points, on a weekend the seven-time world champion called on his team to work together to have any hope of catching Mercedes.

Hamilton made a pointed comparison to his former team, who famously issued 'rules of engagement' between himself and Nico Rosberg in their tense fights for championships in the mid-2010s. The Briton lamented that, at Ferrari, there are seemingly no such rules.

He told GPblog and others: "It comes down to rules of engagement. And when I was at Mercedes, we had a written rules of engagement. So we never really had it too bad. There was a moment maybe with me and Nico a couple of times, but more often than not it was good. Here, there are no rules, and I think that's something that we need to try and fix."
