Hamilton concedes title fight is slipping away after Monza: 'It's many, many weeks too late'

Speaking after finishing a distant sixth at the Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton gave a blunt assessment of where his title hopes now stand. Just 24 hours earlier, the seven-time champion had called on Ferrari to work as a team, but by Sunday evening, the tone had changed.

Hamilton has publicly called for written 'rules of engagement' at Ferrari, citing the system used alongside Nico Rosberg at Mercedes, and argued the team was putting its "dimming" title chances at risk by not prioritising him.

The weekend proved a disaster for Ferrari. Hamilton finished a distant sixth after Leclerc barged him into the gravel on the opening lap, before Leclerc crashed into the Parabolica barrier at high speed on lap two, triggering a red flag. Antonelli, starting from 19th due to engine penalties, charged through the field to win, stretching his lead over Hamilton to 76 points.

The damage extends beyond Hamilton's drivers' title fight. Ferrari slipped 122 points behind Mercedes in the constructors' standings after the Silver Arrows' Monza one-two, while McLaren sits third on 287 points, only 59 behind the Scuderia. Ferrari now finds itself defending on two fronts heading into the Madrid Grand Prix.

Despite the mounting deficit, Hamilton insisted he will keep fighting. "Probably all I can do is just try and turn up. I'll get up tomorrow morning, I'll give it my best," he said. "I think ultimately today I just feel massively gutted for the tifosi who showed up for us today, the guys back at the factory who really really are giving it everything."
