Luke Browning raced in Formula 2 throughout the 2025 season, as well as testing Williams' F1 car in multiple practice sessions throughout the season. However, the Brit is now walking away from F2 in order to pursue other career opportunities. "The obvious goal is Formula 1, and Williams are gearing me up to go for Formula 1."
- Luke BrowningBrowning spoke to various outlets, including GPblog, during the Abu Dhabi weekend about his F2 season, adapting from each single seater car that he has driven, as well as his career opportunities going into 2026 and being a test driver for Williams.
Speaking about being a test driver at Williams, Browning stated: "I’m just trying to become more well-rounded, that’s the opportunity they’re giving me and hopefully I’ll continue to improve."
The Brit had the opportunity to drive the Williams FW47 at the Mexican and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix, with Browning driving the FW47 on two separate occasions at Abu Dhabi, in FP1 and then the post-season test. Browning went third fastest in the post-season test, just two tenths behind Aston Martin's reserve driver, Jak Crawford.
Speaking to GPblog about adapting between an F1 car and an F2 car, Browning stated: “It’s super difficult, to be honest. Often, you have a different seat, a different seat position, the cockpit’s different, the pedal reach is different, how much steering force comes through, power-steering compared to no power-steering. It’s not easy."
Browning continued:
"Last year, within four weeks, I did Formula 3, Formula 2 and Formula 1, so it’s been a bit of a shock, but it’s been a well welcomed one.”Luke Browning - Photo: RacePictures
Browning's future with Williams and the plan for 2026
During the 2025 season, Browning has driven various different single seater machinery, like F1, F2 and also a Super Formula car, following the conclusion of the F2 season. However, despite Browning finishing fourth place in the championship standings, the Brit has decided to step back from F2 after just one season.
Speaking about Williams and the next step in his career, Browning stated: “The obvious goal is Formula 1, and Williams are gearing me up to go for Formula 1. Anything that I do, would be in preparation for that. That’s what they’re preparing me for, it’s the reason why I’m a Williams Junior and why I’ll stay as one next year."
Browning added: "Let’s see what happens in the future, with what opens up. Obviously, the seats are locked for next year {in F1}, but that doesn’t mean they’re not for the year after, or the year after that. It’s only time, so let’s see what happens."
Currently, it appears that Browning may be eyeing a switch to Super Formula, a competitive championship in Japan, where the cars and machinery are generally faster than the cars in F2.
The Brit participated in a Super Formula test at the Suzuka circuit in December.Prior to his test at Suzuka, Browning said: "We thought, ‘what’s the closest thing to Formula One?’ that I can go and test in the off-season. Funnily enough, it’s at Suzuka, a track Formula One races at. It was Williams’ idea to get me track time on a Formula One circuit and in something that’s close to Formula One machinery.”
However, with Browning leaving F2, it also means that the Brit will depart from the Hitech team, who he has been with since 2022, back when he was racing in the GB3 championship.
Speaking about leaving Hitech, Browning stated: "It’s been emotional, in every category I’ve been in, I’ve been super competitive with them. So, it’s like leaving home, it’s graduating. But, all good things have to come to an end, and they’ve shaped me into the driver that I am today. Hopefully now I’m at a stage where I’m Formula 1 ready, or knocking on the door, and that’s all thanks to them.”
