Franco Colapinto is by far the leading candidate to race alongside Pierre Gasly for Alpine in Formula 1 in 2027. The notion, suddenly floated by certain media, that Fernando Alonso would replace him should, at this moment, be dismissed as typical paddock speculation. After a difficult first (nearly full) season with Alpine, Colapinto seems to have rediscovered himself. The Argentinian has already collected sixteen points for Alpine, though it should have been more. During the last race in Barcelona, the youngster lost two positions after he received a time penalty for a yellow flag infringement.
It was a shame after yet another race in which Colapinto showed his pace, having previously achieved the best results of his
F1 career in Miami and Montreal. In many ways, the Argentine, always passionately supported by his many fans, seems to have found his place.
“A lot has changed,” Colapinto began answering a question from
GPblog.
“I think a lot of things changed, of course. There is a new car, new regulations, everything is completely different. And the way I came into the year, it was the opposite to last year, but also to ‘24. I've had a full precision test. And generally, with the car, I've been feeling very comfortable since the start of the year. For some reason, that performance was not coming the first couple of races.”
Colapinto ‘more connected’ with the Alpine
Monaco aside, where Colapinto finished outside the points, he has indeed recently shown a much better synergy with his Alpine. “I was feeling much more comfortable in the car, much more together, much more connected to the car. And that to me was the biggest difference. I was having that quite strong feeling that I was in a good place, even though the pace was not quite coming. We did a lot of work to understand the reasons. And once it clicked, it was a lot easier.”
Just as crucial to performing is the fact that Alpine has no doubts about Colapinto’s talent. The Argentine says he feels that the French team has confidence in him, and that this is also an important factor. GPblog understands that the team is currently aiming to continue with Colapinto for 2027 as teammate to Pierre Gasly, who is under contract for many years to come.
Fernando Alonso to Alpine?
In Barcelona last week, a rumor surfaced that Flavio Briatore, who will likely remain affiliated with the Alpine team as a leader for some time, might want to bring Alonso (once again) to the team for 2027. For now, this is pure speculation, and Alpine is primarily seeking internal stability, with Gasly and Colapinto as constant factors within the team.
The fact that Alonso was spotted in the company of Briatore last weekend is seen by some media as a signal. It should not be forgotten, however, that Briatore has been the two-time world champion’s manager for many years. A conversation between the two is anything but unusual.
