Mercedes established their dominance at the
Circuit de Catalunya as they secured a front row lock out ahead of the
Spanish Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton will start on pole with
Valtteri Bottas in P2.
The Silver Arrows had dominated every session and they made it count when it mattered as they once again shut out the opposition. Hamilton's time of 1:15.584 secured him a record-extending pole with Bottas just behind.
Max Verstappen will start in the familiar place of P3 backed up by the two
Racing Point drivers.
Further down the field
Sebastian Vettel suffered another premature elimination as he succumbed in Q2 by 0.002 of a second behind Lando Norris. It looked for a moment as if he would just scrape in but Pierre Gasly put in a stunning lap to push the German out of the safety zone. Gasly's stunning Q2 lap ensured he out-qualified Danil Kvyat again and continued his good form.
It was a frustrating afternoon for Renault as they had to settle for P13 and P15 for
Daniel Ricciardo and
Esteban Ocon respectively.
Kimi Raikkonen scraped through to Q2 for the first time this season and will start in 14th on Sunday. His teammate
Antonio Giovinazzi will start last after he was beaten by both
Williams and Haas despite both teams being eliminated in Q1.
