Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli has secured victory at the Monaco GP, finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Isack Hadjar with a dominant performance at F1’s Jewel in the Crown. The Italian lined up on Pole ahead of the 78-lap race and has converted that into more important points in the F1 standings.
Instant drama ensued as
Max Verstappen, starting P2, stalled on race start, the Dutchman was subsequently told to bring his car home by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, retiring on Lap 1.
The incident allowed Antonelli to pull away from the
Ferrari duo, building up to a very comfortable lead he kept before late-race chaos.
McLaren's
Lando Norris then suffered heartbreak for the second race in a row, failing to finish due to a battery related issue after 45 laps of action.
A Safety Car on Lap 60 was brought out following a crash for Lance Stroll, and from then on in, chaos reigned. Upon the restart, Leclerc also crashed at the same corner as Stroll,
causing a Red Flag as Turn 19 was inspected. It was also a day of penalties in Monaco, with a total of five drivers receiving five-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane, including Hamilton, Russell, and Pierre Gasly on two occasions. Russell then received a Drive Through penalty for failing to serve his initial punishment correctly.
Speaking after becoming the Monaco GP's youngest ever winner, Antonelli said: "It's been an incredible weekend, an incredible race. It was one of those days we had incredible pace. It was all so natural. The car was feeling incredible and giving me the confidence to push. It was a very enjoyable day.
"The job isn't finished. It's still a long season. We have to keep pushing and raising the bar. The goal is to keep performing like this. The team has done an incredible job. They have given us an incredible car. I've got so much support from the team and my family, it's a really good moment."
