Antonelli defeats Hamilton to take Sprint victory at the British Grand Prix

Thanks to this victory, the Mercedes youngster extended his lead in the drivers' standings to 43 points over George Russell and 47 points over Hamilton.

Russell finished fourth after a hard-fought battle with Norris and Max Verstappen. Charles Leclerc came home fifth, also ahead of the Dutchman, who crossed the finish line in P6. Oscar Piastri and Liam Lawson completed the top eight today.

The frontrunners all opted to start on the medium tyres today. Hamilton and Antonelli started on fresh mediums, while Verstappen started on a used set. The first driver to start on the soft tyres was Lawson.

Antonelli had a better start than the Ferrari driver, but Hamilton was able to keep the lead by closing the door on the young Italian. Verstappen had another poor start and lost a total of three positions off the line. Entering Copse, Norris also overtook Antonelli to move up to second place. However, through the final two corners, the defending world champion lost positions to both Antonelli and Russell.

Entering Lap 3, the wheel-to-wheel battle continued with Norris, Russell and Verstappen all battling for the final position on the podium. That meant that Hamilton and Antonelli were able to escape at the front. By Lap 7, the positions began to consolidate with Norris in third place, ahead of Verstappen, Russell and Leclerc.

On Lap 8, Antonelli made his first attempt to take the lead from Hamilton, but the seven-time world champion successfully defended his position. However, on the Hangar Straight, Antonelli flew past the Ferrari driver. A lap later, Russell also overtook Verstappen on the same straight. On Lap 10, the Dutchman also lost a position to Leclerc.

During the final laps, Hamilton was unable to get within a second of Antonelli, while Russell and Leclerc lost too much time battling Verstappen to close the gap to Norris.
