Kimi Antonelli was potentially on course to win the British Grand Prix. The young Italian was rapidly closing the gap to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, but a car issue prevented him from finishing in the points. As a result, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton gained 18 and 15 points respectively on the Mercedes driver in the championship standings.

Ben Hunt, GPblog's lead columnist, who also experienced the British Grand Prix in the paddock, said about Antonelli: "It’s a funny one isn't it, because when he was doing those passionate pleas, ‘let me finish the race, there's still points up for grabs,’ he knows they all add up at the end of the year, it doesn't matter how you get them. I thought that was brilliant, but there was an element to me that it's kind of reminded me about how young he is and needed the senior members of the team to say, ‘look, just calm down, we need to make sure the car's safe more than anything, and that you're going to be okay, and that we could bring the car home.’
"Because it's all very well in that moment, the emotion, which we all love to hear, but of course there's the pragmatic side, and that's the cool head of Peter Bonnington, his race engineer. I thought that exchange was quite telling, it reminded me a little bit of those Hamilton days at Mercedes with Bonnington. I liked it. I really liked that passionate plea, ‘let me finish the race.’ But of course, as I say, it's tempered with do as you're told sort of thing, they've got the clearer picture, and they need to make a strategic decision. It may have been better, for instance, to have boxed and preserved an element of the car. He didn't know what was going on, he didn't have the full picture."

Antonelli now needs to come back stronger

"I felt sorry for Antonelli, obviously a very dejected figure come the end of the weekend. You mentioned the sprint race, he was phenomenal in that. Blitzed it, looked really good, really strong and there's no doubt that that he's in the championship fight, he's leading the championship still plenty more points to come."
Now comes a crucial part of the season for the young Italian driver. "It’s now about how he bounces back from these couple of bits of adversity. We were talking a lot about that in this podcast previously and about how it's important for him to recover. We saw those elements last year where he had a few setbacks and he struggled initially to rediscover his mojo. He now needs to press that reset button in time for the next race at Spa."
