With the sweeping regulation changes set for 2026, Formula 1 will introduce an entirely new generation of cars. Given the scale of these changes, the sport intends to extend winter testing to allow teams more preparation time. Now, reports suggest that the first venue for next year’s pre-season test has also been chosen.
Motorsport.com reports that Formula 1 plans to start the 2026 season early due to the new technical regulations coming into force. The current plan would be to start in January with a five-day 'shakedown' at Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya, allowing teams to choose which three days they take to the track. This test would take place behind closed doors, meaning no broadcasts or press would be present.
After the shakedown in Barcelona, the whole circus would then move to Bahrain for the actual winter test. The winter test would reportedly consist of six test days, spread over two weeks. The first set of three test days would be completed between 12 and 14 February, with the second trio of days taking place between 18 and 20 February.

Why the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya is a good fit

Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya was Formula 1's regular test track for many years but lost this role to the Bahrain International Circuit three years ago. Barcelona is a logical choice for the shakedown. As a European track, it makes it a lot easier for teams to bring new parts instead of to the Middle East. This allows the teams to use their time even more efficiently.
