Antonelli seals historic maiden F1 title with podium finish in Mexican GP

Kimi Antonelli has become a Formula 1 world champion for the first time in his Formula 1 career. Antonelli finished on the podium in the Mexico City Grand Prix. The young Italian is the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, taking the record from Sebastian Vettel.
Antonelli secured the final spot on the podium at the Mexican Grand Prix, finishing third behind race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. The Italian delivered a composed performance despite the numerous interruptions and Safety Car periods, maintaining his position in the closing stages to secure the result he needed to become Formula 1 world champion.
Antonelli is only in his second season in Formula 1 this year. The Mercedes driver is just 20 years and 68 days old at the moment he clinches the title. That makes him younger than Vettel, who was 23 years, 4 months and 11 days old when he won his first world title.
It has been a remarkable season for Antonelli. After a difficult debut year with Mercedes last season, he has been incredibly dominant this year. The Italian has adapted brilliantly to the new generation of cars and has been dominant and near the front of the field in almost every race weekend.

The Italian has finished on the Formula 1 podium in almost every race this year. By the Mexico City Grand Prix, he had claimed 15 podiums in 18 races, nine of them victories. By comparison, teammate George Russell had won three times and secured nine podiums in 18 races.
Antonelli missed the podium only in Barcelona, Silverstone and Baku. He suffered mechanical trouble in Barcelona. In Silverstone, a run of bad luck saw him finish in fifteenth place. In Baku, he had a difficult qualifying session and crashed. He hit the barriers in Q1, forcing him to fight his way through the field from sixteenth on the grid.

A historic year in Formula 1 for Antonelli

It was clear from the start of the year that Mercedes had a strong car. George Russell won the first race. In the races that followed, Antonelli showed that he had what it takes to become champion. The Italian won in China, Japan and Miami. Antonelli then won in Canada and claimed another victory in Monaco the following race weekend.

After Monaco, Antonelli went three races without a win. He returned to the top step of the podium at Spa-Francorchamps. It was a little while longer before he could do so again. Norris proved too strong in Hungary and Zandvoort.

Antonelli's triumph at his home race in Monza

Antonelli's most memorable victory, perhaps, came at his home race. In Monza, a grid penalty meant he had to start from the back of the field. He produced a phenomenal charge through the field to take the win. A week later, he also won in Madrid.
After failing to win in Baku, Malaysia and Singapore, he had the chance to secure the title in Austin last week. Although he won, Russell scored too many points, so the celebrations had to wait. With his performance today at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Antonelli has secured his first title.
