FIA delivers verdict after Hamilton and Leclerc's explosive Ferrari battle

Charles Leclerc has received a five-second time penalty at the Mexican Grand Prix after cutting the opening chicane during his first-lap battle with Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton. The Monegasque emerged in the lead following the incident, but his failure to negotiate the corner correctly has now resulted in a penalty from the stewards.
Leclerc initially challenged Hamilton for the lead into Turn 1, but the seven-time world champion managed to hold his position. The Monegasque then attempted another move around the outside of Turn 4, running onto the grass and cutting the chicane.
Under normal circumstances, the Ferrari driver could have avoided a potential penalty by handing the position back to his teammate. However, the situation became complicated when Max Verstappen moved between the two Ferraris, leaving Leclerc unable to simply return the place to Hamilton without also surrendering a position to the Red Bull driver.
The stewards have now imposed a five-second penalty on Leclerc, which will be added to his race time unless he serves it during a pit stop.
