Max Verstappen has extended his lead over George Russell in the Drivers' Championship standings to seventeen points. The Dutchman climbed from 21st to second in the São Paulo Grand Prix, behind winner Lando Norris. World champion Kimi Antonelli has 390 points with three races remaining.
Verstappen is now on 279 points after his second-place finish. On a wet Interlagos circuit, he had already moved up to fifth after eleven laps. At the halfway point of the race, Isack Hadjar let him through for second place at Red Bull's request. Verstappen was unable to close the gap to Norris after that, but his eighteen points extended his lead over Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
Russell finished fourth after spinning at the pit exit during his first pit stop. In the closing stages, Antonelli let him through, leaving Russell on 262 points, one ahead of Hamilton. The Ferrari driver was already ninth on the opening lap, switched to slicks early and ultimately finished ninth as well. Antonelli came fifth after losing the lead earlier in the race with a spin.
