Toto Wolff joked about Kimi Antonelli’s poor start at the Japanese Grand Prix, which saw him lose several positions off the line. The Italian had secured his second consecutive pole in qualifying, but failed to hold on to it into Turn 1 after a poor clutch release, dropping as low as fifth by the exit of the opening corner, even behind his team-mate.
Speaking to DAZN after the race, the Silver Arrows team principal jokingly suggested that Antonelli might need to go back to driving school to relearn how to use the clutch properly.
“His driving was very good, no doubt. The start wasn’t good. We need to send him to driving school so he can learn how to release the clutch properly, but he was quick when it mattered. We had to stop George a bit earlier to make sure Leclerc didn’t take the position from him, and that made the difference. But you have to make your own luck, and that’s what he did today.”
