Will the Monaco Grand Prix be cancelled?

With the cancellation or postponement of several Grand Prix, Monaco seemed likely to become the season opener for Formula 1. That plan can now be thrown in the bin.
The starting date of the Formula 1 season in 2020 will be moved further and further forward. Where the race in Australia was canceled just before the start and the season was postponed to the end of May for the time being, we will now have to wait even longer.
The Monaco Grand Prix on May 24 was seen as the season opener, but that possibility doesn't seem to be able to continue. Indeed, the government of Monaco has decided to lock up all 'non-essential' public places, after the third case of COVID-19 was found in the city on Friday.

A unique feature of Formula 1

It is unclear but with the time it takes to organize a Grand Prix, it seems unlikely that the Monaco Grand Prix can continue. If that is indeed the case, it will be the first time since 1954 that no Formula 1 race is held in the city.

If the race cannot take place in Monaco, another Formula 1 season opener will have to be considered. The next race on the calendar is the Baku Grand Prix on June 7, with the race in Montreal one week later. The organization of Formula 1 will want to do everything possible to keep the 'crown jewel' of the sport on the calendar in one way or another.
