Max Verstappen remained cautious about the Netherlands' chances at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, admitting that their path will depend heavily on which teams they come up against in the next rounds.
Overnight, the Oranje secured a 3-1 victory over Tunisia and, thanks to Japan's draw with Sweden, finished top of their group. They will now face Morocco in the round of 32, with the North Africans having been one of the surprise packages of the last World Cup by reaching the semi-finals before eventually being knocked out by France.
Speaking to GPBlog among other media in Austria about the Netherlands' World Cup campaign, Verstappen admitted he has been following most of the matches, although not the ones played in the early hours of the morning. The Dutchman said the team's chances of progressing deep into the tournament will largely depend on the opponents awaiting them in the knockout stages, adding that he believes the Netherlands could face a particularly difficult path. Nevertheless, he said he hopes they can go as far as possible, while acknowledging the strength of the other nations still in contention.
"I've been watching most of it before, let's say, midnight. The later games at like two or three o'clock, I'm not watching, but it's been okay. But at the end of the day, it also depends on what are the next teams that you'll face. I think we are a little bit on an unlucky side if we progress in terms of competition, but I hope they do well. There are a lot of great countries out there, right? But as a Dutch fan, of course, I want them to reach far.".

'Verstappen in secret talks with McLaren about a swap with Piastri'

Fresh speculation surrounding Max Verstappen's future has linked the Dutchman with a shock move to McLaren. According to a report from the British media, discussions are allegedly taking place that could see Verstappen join the Woking-based team, with Oscar Piastri moving in the opposite direction to Red Bull either next season or in 2028.
However, McLaren has firmly rejected those claims. In a response to GPBlog, the team categorically denied that any talks with Verstappen are taking place, while reiterating its confidence in its current driver line-up of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Although paddock speculation has suggested Piastri could be keeping his long-term options open, McLaren also dismissed that narrative, insisting its relationship with the Australian remains very strong.
