Max Verstappen has responded to speculation surrounding his future during a crucial weekend for both himself and Red Bull, with the Milton Keynes-based team introducing a substantial upgrade package on the RB22 for its home race.
Red Bull heads into its home race looking to bounce back after a modest outing in Barcelona, where Verstappen was unable to challenge at the front. In response, the team has prepared an extensive set of upgrades focused not only on extracting more pace from the car but also on reducing excess weight, with reaching the minimum weight target seen as a key step towards improving the RB22's balance and behaviour on track.
Ahead of the race weekend, another major update emerged on the driver market front, with George Russell set to remain at Mercedes next season. Reports suggested the German team had exercised an option in the Briton's contract, although those claims have been denied. However, GPblog understands that Russell is tied to Mercedes on a multi-year deal, meaning he is also expected to stay with the team in 2027.
Speaking to GPblog among others ahead of the race weekend about the importance of the upgrades in influencing any decision on his future, Verstappen insisted the focus remains on improving Red Bull's performance. The Dutchman stressed that the team's priority is to make progress from where it started the season, acknowledging that the car is still lacking pace. He added that nobody at Red Bull is satisfied with fighting further down the order and emphasised that everyone is working hard to move the team back towards the front.
"It's just crucial. I think for us as a team, we want to just improve from where we started this season to where we want to end it. We know that we are lacking performance, so it's more about just trying to improve the car. I think that's what everyone wants. We don't like to be fourth, so we want to be better, and that's what we are working on at the moment.".

Asked whether he is satisfied with the team's rate of development so far, Verstappen acknowledged that progress has been made but stressed that the final step towards consistently fighting for victories is always the most difficult. He praised Red Bull's efforts to improve the car, while noting that rival teams are also continuing to introduce upgrades. The Dutchman admitted the performance gap was still evident in Barcelona and expressed hope that the latest developments would help Red Bull close it further this weekend.
"That's good, but those are, of course, also the easier steps to make, right? When you are far behind, the hardest one is always the last one to really fight for the win. So, yeah, let's see how we can do that to be in that fight again. The team is always giving it 100% and pushing flat out to make the car faster. But we also know that other teams are also constantly bringing upgrades, you know, so we just need to always try and find a little bit more to try and close that gap, which, yeah, was quite clear. Of course, in Barcelona, it was still a gap, so hopefully, this weekend it can be a bit better.".
