Russell labels Hamilton and Ferrari 'a huge threat' in clear title fight warning

The seven-time world champion arrives at the Red Bull Ring riding the wave of momentum from his first Ferrari victory, secured two weekends ago in Barcelona. That win ended a drought that had lasted almost a year and a half and further extended the positive run that had already seen him claim podium finishes in China, Canada and Monaco.

Speaking ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, the Briton praised Hamilton's return to form, pointing to it as a reminder of just how difficult Formula 1 is. Russell stressed that modern cars, tyres and power units are so complex that everything has to work perfectly together for a driver to perform at their best. He also noted that many had questioned Hamilton's level over the past two seasons, but believes his recent performances prove that drivers do not simply lose their abilities overnight.

Russell explained that success in Formula 1 depends on every element coming together, from the driver and team to the car setup and tyre understanding. He believes Hamilton is currently in that sweet spot, which is why he has become such a significant threat in the title fight: "You need yourself, your team, the setup, the understanding of the tyres, everything just to click. And when it clicks, you fly. As he said, 'it's beautiful'. And that's where he is at the moment. And for sure, he is a big threat. Ferrari are a huge threat. Kimi is still very much the driver out front and his performance really incredibly and consistently. But Ferrari feel like they're coming and Lewis is at the forefront of that."

Neymar made his 2026 FIFA World Cup debut in Brazil's win over Scotland on Wednesday night after recovering from injury. After the match, the Brazilian forward posted a series of photos on social media with the caption, "Remember who you are," the same phrase used by Hamilton after his victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Hamilton later replied to Neymar's post on Instagram, writing: "Always."

Hamilton had already made it clear before the tournament that, alongside England, Brazil are the team he supports. The seven-time world champion explained that he grew up loving the way Brazil played and admitted they have always been his favourite international side, putting them on the same level as England: "Growing up in England I used to love watching Brazil play. Honestly, Brazil's always been my favourite team. They were so cool. For me, it's [Brazil] tied with England."
