Helmut Marko has firmly ruled out Max Verstappen from the 2026 drivers’ championship race in his recent assessment of the 2026 campaign. The former
Red Bull Racing advisor, who also responded to questions about the four-time world champion’s recent racing activities – including his outing at the Nürburgring – ultimately shifted focus back to
Formula 1, where he was clear in his verdict that Verstappen is no longer in the title mix this year.
When asked about Verstappen’s GT racing appearances, Marko explained that he keeps track of them online and admitted he is impressed by what he sees.
“I watch everything online. It's always impressive how they plow through the field,” the 82-year-old said via oe24.
Pressed on whether Verstappen could still mount a title challenge in 2026, Marko was blunt in his response:
“I'm afraid that won't happen this year.”
Verstappen and Red Bull have endured a difficult start to the campaign, with the team yet to secure a top-three finish. Their struggles are even more evident in the Constructors’ standings, where the team
sit 119 points adrift of early pace-setters Mercedes after just three rounds.
Marko delivers bold title verdict
While ruling Verstappen out of contention, Marko suggested the championship battle is now shaping up
between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. The Austrian was particularly complimentary about Antonelli, hinting that the young Mercedes driver could emerge as a genuine title contender. However, he also cautioned that the European leg of the season – where Antonelli struggled at times during his debut campaign – will be the real test of his credentials as a world championship contender.
