After a splendid lap from Max Verstappen, he managed to surprise friends and foes alike by taking pole. Yet, this says nothing about the outcome of the British GP, according to the Dutchman. His goal, he says with a laugh: having fun! No McLaren on pole for the British GP, but once again a Red Bull. Verstappen starts at the front after a challenging weekend,
as was discussed earlier.
"It was very difficult to balance. I think today, we definitely improved the understeer and that just allowed me to push a bit more because understeer is slow, especially in F1. So, we just needed to try and minimise that," says the reigning world champion at the post-qualifying press conference, where
GPBlog was on site.
However, the Grand Prix weekend is not over yet. The race is still to come, with a slight chance of rain. Does this play into Verstappen and Red Bull's hands, or not? The Dutchman elaborates on his chances for the race, but remains level-headed.
Verstappen: 'It's going to be tough there'
When asked about what he can achieve in the race, he admits that a victory is not so simple. "Let's see. We’ll just go in there and try to do the best we can. Normally in the race runs, we struggle a bit more on tyre life."
"I don't know how that will be tomorrow. We have to wait and see a little bit also how the weather will be in general, if there is some rain or not," says Verstappen, who might be able to take an advantage with the benefit on the long straights from pole.
Yet, he fears something else. "The straight-line speed is nice to have but you still need to manage the tyres around here. It's very tough with all these high-speed corners. But I'm just looking forward to it," continues the reigning world champion, pointing out the slim chances for the world title this year: "I'm not really in a battle, so I’ll just try to have fun and try to get the best possible result."
