Max Verstappen has always been vocal about his opinions on Formula 1. The Red Bull Racing driver explained that for several reasons, he would like Formula 1 to take a step back in time. “Nowadays, you have to be careful with the statements you make, as they are quickly picked up. But if I may say so diplomatically: I'm not a fan of street circuits,” Verstappen began, speaking to
Formula1.nl.
“In the past, there were gravel traps everywhere, which was actually much better,” the Dutchman continued.
Verstappen is not a fan of new street circuits like Las Vegas and Miami
The four-time world champion does see why there are fewer gravel traps nowadays. He explained that the circuits also used by the MotoGP class often do not have gravel traps for safety reasons. Therefore, he understands that Formula 1 cannot always properly adapt the circuits. “I can't change it, but of course, I would have liked to see certain things differently,” said the Red Bull driver.
Verstappen would like to step into the time machine
Not only the circuits fail to impress Verstappen these days, but according to the Dutchman, the cars used to be much better as well. Asked about his opinion on a return to V8, V10, or V12 engines, he said: “That would mean we’d have to use earplugs again. I think not only the drivers but also the fans in the stands would definitely find it better and more beautiful.”
The experience of the sport becomes much more intense with louder engines. Verstappen admitted that he loved this as a child, but it did mean he had to wear earplugs to protect his ears. “Admittedly, the current situation might be somewhat better for hearing, but for passion and experience, it would be better to go back to the loud engines of the past,” the Dutchman concluded.
Earlier this year, a meeting about the V10 engines was held by the FIA. It revealed that it is not a realistic goal for the future of the sport.
