Max Verstappen would now be able to participate in a hypercar race in WEC (World Endurance Championship), after he received his platinum rating by the FIA. In Barcelona, the defending F1 world champion joked about wanting a different rating instead. Verstappen explained that he applied two weeks ago, but got the confirmation just now.
He explained he did for a practical reason. "No, I applied because I have to do it at some point, so I better get it out of the way. I mean, it's super easy, it's just a form, and you fill in and you pay. And a week later you have the answer," he told GPblog among others.
"I was secretly hoping for a bronze rating. I might appeal the platinum, get silver at least," the four-time world champion then joked.
Verstappen had to do just this to get a premium rating
As Verstappen explained, getting the platinum rating was just a formality. F1 drivers are eligible for the highest category, given that they fill out the necessary form. Current F1 drivers who are yet to complete that are ranked gold by the FIA.
The Dutchman never kept it a secret he wants to try himself out in endurance racing in his career, and would like to compete at events such as the 24 hours of Le Mans.
