Max Verstappen has echoed his thoughts on the tweaks made to the regulations ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. The
Red Bull Racing driver, who has consistently been vocal about perceived flaws in the current ruleset, again shared his perspective after the
FIA introduced a series of adjustments ahead of the race weekend in Florida. However, Verstappen chose to emphasise what he sees as a key positive from the situation – the ongoing dialogue between the FIA,
Formula 1, and the drivers.
The four-time world champion suggested that this improved communication could serve as a foundation for future regulation changes.
“The positive thing about it is that we had some nice meetings with Formula 1 and the FIA. I think that's probably like a starting point hopefully for the future, even if there is time or maybe I'm not here anymore. I really hope that for the future drivers as well there's more input to come from the drivers to the organisers in general because I do think that most of the drivers here have a good understanding and a good feel of what is needed to make Formula One a good product, a fun product,” Verstappen said to GPblog in Miami.
“I think that's already a huge step forward in terms of the communication. Of course, with the changes that are made, I think it's more like a tickle. Because at the end of the day, you know, for us it is a very complex and political sport. But I think everyone has tried their best to at least do something. But of course, it won't change the world,” he added.
Pressed further on whether he has driven the simulator, and how far talks have progressed on restoring the more traditional qualifying feeling and other ideas he cares about, he continued:
“Like I said, it's a pickle [referencing the changes made]. It's not what we need yet to really make it flat out. But like I said, it's complicated to get everyone to agree. I just hope for next year we can make really big, big changes,” Verstappen concluded.
The adjustments to the regulations have continued to generate a range of reactions from drivers. While some have taken a more measured stance, others, including Lance
Stroll, have been more outspoken about what they see as fundamental flaws in the current framework.
Alonso fires reality check on rule tweaks
Earlier, Fernando
Alonso struck a sceptical tone regarding the impact of the regulation changes introduced ahead of the Miami Grand Prix weekend. The Aston Martin driver suggested that any real judgment on their effectiveness would only come once cars are on track.
Alonso also admitted some uncertainty over the changes, saying he is not fully convinced they will meaningfully improve the racing product.
