With the opening day of track action at Marina Bay now complete, attention turns to how the drivers will line up for Saturday's final Sprint race of the season. Here is the provisional starting grid for the Singapore Grand Prix Sprint.
Max Verstappen will lead the field into Saturday's Singapore Grand Prix Sprint after securing pole position in a closely contested qualifying session at Marina Bay. The Red Bull driver continued to build on his impressive victory in Malaysia, producing a decisive final lap to beat George Russell by just 0.120 seconds.
Charles Leclerc will line up third for Ferrari, alongside Oscar Piastri, while Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton complete the third row. However, Verstappen's pole position came under threat shortly after the session when the stewards investigated his overtake on Hamilton under yellow flags during SQ1. Despite acknowledging a breach of the regulations, the FIA ultimately decided against a penalty, leaving the Dutchman at the front of the grid.
Mercedes emerged from Friday's running with two very different results, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding its latest upgrade package. Russell secured second place with the older specification of the W17, while teammate Kimi Antonelli qualified only seventh despite running the newer components. The Italian finished approximately half a second behind Russell, raising further doubts about whether the upgrades introduced in Malaysia are delivering the intended benefits.

Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin admitted that Mercedes is struggling to understand the lack of improvement, particularly as Antonelli continues to experience difficulties with the car's balance under braking and on corner entry. The contrasting results leave the team with plenty to investigate before Saturday's Grand Prix qualifying session.
Behind the leading three teams, Liam Lawson secured eighth place for Racing Bulls, with Isack Hadjar ninth for Red Bull and Pierre Gasly completing the top ten for Alpine. The result also underlined the different fortunes within several teams, with Russell comfortably ahead of Antonelli and Leclerc outperforming Hamilton.
For Russell, Saturday's Sprint offers an opportunity to fight for victory from the front row before the more difficult prospect of Sunday's Grand Prix, when he must serve a substantial grid penalty for power-unit component changes. His penalty does not apply to the Sprint, meaning his second-place starting position remains intact.
Sprint Qualifying also featured plenty of chaos, beginning with Sergio Perez's crash at Turn 5, which left debris scattered across the circuit and eventually forced Race Control to suspend SQ1. The disruption continued with a timing system issue that delayed the start of SQ2, while the FIA later acknowledged a separate human error involving Overtake Mode.
Following the restart, the system remained unavailable before being briefly activated for just 27 seconds and then switched off again. The governing body explained that the mistake affected drivers differently depending on their position on track and the timing of their laps, although SQ2 and SQ3 were unaffected.
