Former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock has warned Red Bull that Max Verstappen requires a car capable of clinching the world championship.
Verstappen has dominated the ground effect era since 2022 and won his fourth title last season with two races to spare.
The Red Bull driver has been left frustrated this year as he isn't in championship contention, as McLaren are setting the pace.
McLaren hold a commanding 217-point lead in the Constructors' Championship. The drivers title should be an exclusive battle between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris too.
Verstappen's issues may be compounded next year with the new regulations and Mercedes may have the upper hand.
Glock told Sky Germany ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring that Verstappen is wary of Mercedes having an advantage in 2026.
The German said: "Max Verstappen wants a car with which he can compete for the World Championship. He will look at everything around him. He knows exactly where Red Bull stands and what their engine development is all about.
"He will hear exactly what we're hearing: that Mercedes is already incredibly far along with the new powertrain for 2026. That's the big point. When you have such a big lead, he knows he's in the wrong car."

Glock feels Russell could match Verstappen

Verstappen does have a long contract with Red Bull until 2028, but the Austrian team will have to build its own engine from next year, collaborating with Ford.
This extra component could raise some issues, as the new power unit regulations are highly complex with sustainable fuels.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has spoken with Verstappen and there may be some availability at the team for next year.
Neither George Russell nor Andrea Kimi Antonelli are confirmed for next year, which may open the door for Verstappen.
Russell and the Dutchman have had some battles on and off the track, and they would be a formidable pairing.
Glock feels Russell would be able to compete with the four-time world champion in the same car.
He said: "He could compete with Max Verstappen; Aston Martin or Cadillac would also be options. With the performances he's shown, he's making himself interesting for teams. He doesn't have to hide his performance."
