It was a bitter pill for Ferrari juniors Mick Schumacher and Callum Ilott when the first free practice session at the Nürburgring was canceled. As a result, the young drivers will have to wait a while for their Formula 1 debut. For Schumacher, this debut could be sooner than expected.

Staying positive

Of course Schumacher was disappointed missing his Formula 1 debut, but above all he sees the positive side of that weekend. "At least I had the chance to work with the team, to attend the engineering meetings and to talk to the mechanics. I wanted to learn more that weekend and I succeeded. I was able to follow how the team works, the whole philosophy behind how a racing team works in a GP weekend.”

No chances in the next Grand Prix

The cancellation of the free practice in the Eifel means that the Ferrari talents, including Robert Shwartzman, will have to be patient for a while. According to Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto , the upcoming Grand Prix weekends are not an option. "Portimão is a new circuit for everyone, in Istanbul we have never driven turbo-hybrid engines before and in Imola we will only have a two-day weekend," Binotto explained on Speedweek.com .

The two weekends in Abu Dhabi will also be difficult to include training sessions with the Ferrari talents. "A race in the Bahrain desert is difficult," the Italian continued. "Schumacher and Ilott will have to challenge their Formula 2 races there and concentrate on that." Schumacher and Ilott are currently first and second in the Formula 2 championship with 191 and 169 points respectively. Red Bull talent Yuki Tsunoda is third with 147 points.

Young drivers test

Where the young talents will at least get a chance is during the Young Drivers Test in Abu Dhabi on December 15, the Tuesday after the race weekend. For Mick Schumacher, however, it looks like he will be able to take his place in the Alfa Romeo on Friday December 11, during the free practice at the Yas Marina Circuit, as Speedweek.com reports.
