Sainz warned his F1 career is 'stalling out' as Williams 2026 struggles continue

Following a remarkable 'best of the rest' P5 finish in the 2025 Constructors' standings, including two podiums for Sainz in Azerbaijan and Qatar, hopes were high that Williams were on their way back to the very front of the F1 grid - especially considering the Grove team had been prioritising development for the 2026 season.

However, the British team have fallen to the back of this year's grid, potentially now only ahead of Cadillac after Aston Martin introduced major upgrades at the Hungarian GP, where Alex Albon and Sainz finished P17 and P18, respectively, prior to the summer shutdown. Williams did secure four points finishes in the opening six races, but have gone on a barren run since the Barcelona GP.

Matters have only been made more complicated by reports of Audi's interest in Sainz heading into the summer break, with the 31-year-old connected to the German marque via his father's Dakar Rally winning exploits. Sainz's F1 future is expected to be clearer upon the sport's return to racing at Zandvoort in late August.

Reflecting on Sainz's decision to join Williams in the first place, with no real end to their 2026 struggles in sight as things stand, Brundle commented: “He really committed to it, didn’t he?

On whether the four-time race winner ultimately deserves more from his career, Brundle added: "He’s had some brilliant races in a Ferrari. I think he’s ended up down a cul-de-sac here. So hopefully Williams has an answer for ’27.”

Focusing more closely on where things have gone wrong for the Grove team, Brundle has drawn a comparison with reigning world champions McLaren, arguing Williams have learned that what may have worked for them last season has not translated to new regulations in 2026.
