“What everyone else does is not my business…”
- Carlos SainzSainz, who was quizzed about his podium win and the subtle comparison with Hamilton during his post-race presser in Baku, stressed how he cares solely about the feat he has achieved with the
Williams Racing team.
“What everyone else does is not my business, to be honest. What I care about is that the first opportunity that I had to score a podium with Williams, and the first opportunity Williams had to score a podium, we took it, we scored it, and there it is.”
Sainz has witnessed his performance at the Williams outfit draw subtle comparison with Hamilton, who has so far experienced a turbulent start to his chapter at the Scuderia Ferrari team. The seven-time champion, who completed a move to the Marenello-based outfit, is yet to record a podium finish through the first 17 races of the campaign with the team.
Hamilton edges closer to the bizarre record of being the driver with the most races without a podium finish for Ferrari – 19, a record currently held by Didier Pironi.
For Sainz, on his part, the Spaniard will aim to build on his newfound form as the
F1 grid heads to Marina Bay for the Singapore Grand Prix.
James Vowles on Carlos Sainz's Baku success
Williams Racing team principal
James Vowles touched on the success of Carlos Sainz during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The 46-year-old, during his media interaction, was largely cautious with his words while celebrating the success of the Spaniard.
“We had about ten different items to get the tyres in a better window, and it worked,” he explained.
“Carlos’ lap wasn’t magic – it was a good lap – but it showed we had the tyres in the right place.”
This execution largely influenced Sainz’s outcome at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as his qualifying translated to a podium finish.
