George Russell admitted he is not currently focused on the championship battle, even though team-mate Kimi Antonelli's retirement in the closing stages of the Spanish Grand Prix helped him significantly reduce the gap in the drivers' standings.
The Briton had led the race for much of the distance, only to lose out first to a dominant Lewis Hamilton, aided by the timing of the VSC, and then to his team-mate, who once again got the better of him and looked set to gain another three points in the championship battle. However, a technical issue brought his race to an abrupt end, forcing him to retire with just four laps remaining. The gap therefore shrank from a potential 71 points to 50, although seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton remains in between on 115 points, 11 more than the Briton.
Speaking after the race, the Briton admitted he was not focusing on the championship battle and was instead concentrating on what he could control: "I’m going to be honest: I’m not really thinking about the championship. I’m thinking about just controlling my controllables. Friday and Saturday I felt like I did everything to the best of my ability and got absolutely the best result possible on almost every single lap I did."
He pointed to tyre management as the key challenge, noting that it was the first race of the season to feature significant degradation. Unlike the previous six Grands Prix, which had all been straightforward one-stop races, this event required a completely different approach, with the winner ultimately prevailing on a three-stop strategy.

"Today, I made a great start. The first stint was solid, but the last two stints on the hard wasn’t good enough. So, my head is coming out of this race thinking performance was not strong enough and I need to make some improvements. It’s a challenging circuit. It’s the first race of the year where we’ve had major tyre degradation. The winner was on a three-stop strategy. The six races prior have been an easy one-stop. So totally different ballgame today. We’ll reassess in Austria. But as I said, I’m going to control my controllables and keep on trying to apply the pressure."

Russell distances himself from Antonelli alliance in bid to halt Hamilton

Russell was reluctant to read too much into Ferrari's recent resurgence, stressing that the competitive order remains highly volatile as teams continue to introduce major upgrades throughout the season. The Mercedes driver pointed out that several outfits have already experienced significant swings in performance from one race to the next, with development proving to be the key factor in determining who holds the upper hand at any given weekend.
“At the moment, Lewis is obviously ahead of me in the championship. We need to see across the course of a couple of races. They did bring a big upgrade here and I think the development slope is so steep at the moment for all of the teams.”
According to Russell, Ferrari's step forward in Barcelona was an example of how quickly fortunes can change in the current Formula 1 landscape, but he believes it will take several more races before a clearer picture emerges regarding the true pecking order. The Briton also highlighted how McLaren enjoyed a strong boost after its upgrades earlier in the season, while both Mercedes and Ferrari have since made gains of their own.

“Whoever is going to be bringing those upgrades earliest is going to be taking a step forward. And we saw it with McLaren in Miami, having a really strong weekend, and then ourselves and Ferrari have taken a step forward thereafter. So honestly, the approach doesn’t change for me. I’m just looking to maximise my weekends. It hasn’t been the case recently, and see where it takes us.”
