Renault have announced that engine upgrades worth around half a second per lap are coming soon.
Renault-powered Red Bull won last time out in Shanghai with Daniel Ricciardo, although that was more down to misfortune of others and a clever pit stop strategy.
McLaren and obviously Renault are the other teams to use Renault power units. Both these teams have had solid starts to the season, with Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg leading them to fourth and fifth places respectively in the Constructors’ Championship standings, albeit early season.
Renault team boss Cyril Abiteboul, when asked about how the upgrades would affect the car, said: “We talk about a substantial amount. We talk about more than half a second (per lap) in terms of development during the season and that is only for the engine.”
Abiteboul knows that Renault must keep up their developments if they want to catch and compete with the best.
“Of course, the top teams and the top engine suppliers will not stand still either. It is therefore important that we speed up our plan, but we do it well.”
If Renault’s upgrades go to plan, it will likely put Red Bull even more in the mix, and who doesn’t want to see that?
