Red Bull's Head of Racing, Gianpiero Lambiase, stressed that the team still has plenty of work to do despite a positive Friday at Spa. Red Bull Racing was one of the surprises on the opening day of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.
Max Verstappen topped the timesheets in FP1 ahead of the two Ferrari drivers before backing it up with another top-three finish in FP2.
"Promising start to the weekend for us today," GP acknowledged when reacting to the Belgian GP's first day on social media.
Both Verstappen and
Isack Hadjar received new power unit components for the Belgian Grand Prix weekend. As a result, Hadjar will start Sunday's race from the back of the grid.
"We obviously came into the event with some penalties for Isack, so already with our approach on our tyre utilisation for his car specifically was a little bit different to usual. He was happier in FP1 as opposed to FP2.
"I think he struggled a little bit more with the balance, although having said that, degradation seems quite high. Graining is definitely on the agenda. We saw that with both cars after five or six laps, the tyres are really starting to hurt so that's going to be a primary focus for us this evening."
Red Bull's plans to improve Verstappen's RB22
Verstappen said his car was in a
"good window" after the opening day at Spa-Francorchamps. However, Lambiase highlighted that Red Bull still has work to do to fine-tune the Dutchman's car if it wants to fight for pole position on Saturday and victory on Sunday.
GP continued: "On top of that obviously we're not quite where we want to be either with Max missing a few tenths so again a little bit of focus for Max on dialing in some front end.
"And then yeah, finally another energy-poor track similar to Silverstone so really going through that with a fine tooth comb, trying to understand where the sensitivities lie and how it there is any way to drive the car or drive the battery in a way that is more performance optimum," Lambiase concluded.
