Oscar Piastri had a tough weekend in Miami. The young Australian finished 19th during the race. Piastri indicated in McLaren' s press release that he had to manage many problems during the race and that his brake-by-wire system was giving many failures. On the first lap, Piastri managed to overtake five cars, after which things went downhill. "Well, it worked on the first lap," Piastri joked.
The 22-year-old rookie surged forward on the soft tyre in the early stages. But after the first pit stop, both McLarens faced problems. Piastri had to drive around the problems throughout the race, in which the McLarens were anything but competitive. "I had a really good lap one, where I managed to pass five cars and that was the highlight of the weekend. But about three or four laps after the pit stop I had a brake-by-wire failure with some other failures. “It was sudden, hit the brakes one lap and the brake pedal just went to the floor. So that was why the pace was so terrible," Piastri says.

'A calculated risk'

The McLaren team started the Miami race from the backfield with an aggressive strategy, to be the only ones to start on the softs. It was "a calculated risk", Piastri said. “To be honest, we weren’t going to get into the points on pace today. Tried something different, didn’t really work. We’ll now get our heads down and focus on having a better weekend in Imola." the Australian concluded in the press release.
