The second free practice in Zandvoort not only yielded action on the track but also in the pit lane. Oscar Piastri and George Russell came dangerously close to each other, after which the FIA decided to investigate the incident further. During the second red flag, caused by a crash from Alex Albon, all drivers were required to return to the pits.
Oscar Piastri made a mistake by initially driving to the garage of teammate Lando Norris.
He realised his error and steered back onto the track, but George Russell was headed his way.
The Mercedes driver had to avoid Piastri's
McLaren and there was slight contact. Russell was startled by the moment and made it known via the board radio.
The stewards investigated the incident and ruled that the team violated article 12.2.1.h of the sports regulations, which relates to dangerous driving behavior.
McLaren fined for Piastri incident
The FIA stewards believe the situation arose because Piastri was sent back onto the track by Norris's McLaren mechanics.
He then steered his car right in front of Russell's Mercedes, which according to the stewards, could have led to a serious crash and possible danger to nearby mechanics.
The conclusion: Piastri goes unpunished, but McLaren is fined €5,000 for causing an unsafe situation in the pit lane.
