Sergio Perez wanted to remind everyone of his defense against Lewis Hamilton in the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP—his own way. The Mexican took to social media to comment on
Yuki Tsunoda’s defense against
Lando Norris, which could have been just as crucial as the one Perez pulled off against Hamilton four years ago on the same track.
The former Red Bull driver managed to hold up the seven-time world champion for two full laps despite a clear tyre disadvantage—a feat Tsunoda, on the other hand, wasn’t able to replicate, failing to defend his position.
It was precisely the time Perez cost Hamilton that allowed Red Bull to open a pit-stop window under the safety car in the closing laps, ultimately enabling Verstappen to secure his first career title.

During the race, Perez reposted a well-known meme from the movie Avengers: Endgame on his X profile, featuring the villain Thanos saying, “Perhaps I treated you too harshly”—a clear nod to his recent past in Milton Keynes.

In the end, the stewards handed Tsunoda a five-second penalty for weaving, clearing Norris of any wrongdoing. This allowed the McLaren driver to relax, as a penalty at that moment could have put his championship hopes in jeopardy.
Norris eventually crossed the line seven seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc, clinching the world title despite finishing third. But why was it Tsunoda, and not Norris, who was penalized?
