Yas Marina Circuit

Located approximately 30 kilometers from the center of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, the Yas Marina Circuit is a world-renowned venue that has hosted the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since 2009. Over the years, this stunning track has become synonymous with the end-of-season race, often serving as the final event in the Formula 1 calendar. Known for its modern infrastructure and breathtaking views, Yas Marina has established itself as one of the premier circuits in the sport.

When the plans for Yas Marina Circuit were first announced, the vision was clear: to create a track reminiscent of the legendary Monaco Grand Prix. The goal was for the cars to race along a stunning marina and through a futuristic cityscape. However, there was one major issue—the city didn’t exist yet.

Undeterred, the authorities in the UAE set to work, and construction on the complex began in 2007, with the track being ready for the first Formula 1 race in 2009. Although the city surrounding the circuit wasn’t fully developed initially, the track still featured a beautiful marina, and the striking Yas Hotel with its luminous roof became an iconic sight, adding to the unique atmosphere of the event.

The Yas Marina Circuit is known for its combination of speed, precision, and scenic beauty. It boasts features such as a total length of 5.554 km including 16 corners, making it a technically demanding circuit that challenges even the most experienced drivers.Furthermore, the circuit is known for its modern and visually striking design, incorporating a marina, luxury hotels, and futuristic architecture that makes it a standout in the F1 calendar. Another special feature is the scheduled start late in the afternoon which will have the race run into nightfall, with the beautiful Abu Dhabi sunset setting the stage for the action under lights. Finally, Yas Marina features a mix of high-speed straights and challenging corners that require precise braking and acceleration, testing drivers' technical abilities.

In 2021, the Yas Marina Circuit underwent a significant redesign to improve overtaking opportunities and enhance the racing spectacle. The circuit was shortened by nearly 200 meters, and several slower corners were replaced with faster, more flowing sections. These changes were aimed at making the circuit more competitive and exciting for both drivers and fans, allowing for more action on track. The modifications proved successful, delivering better racing and more overtakes during the 2021 season finale.

Since its debut in 2009, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been a key event on the Formula 1 calendar, often serving as the season-ending race. The timing of the race, starting in the late afternoon and finishing at night, creates a magical atmosphere, with the sun setting over the track, adding to the spectacle.

The Abu Dhabi GP is known for its strategic importance, as it frequently serves as the deciding race in the Formula 1 World Championship. The drama that unfolds during the final laps often determines who will take home the coveted title.

Over the years, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina has witnessed several historic moments, such as the finale of the 2010 season. This was one of the most dramatic seasons in Formula 1 history, with four drivers in the running for the championship heading into the Abu Dhabi GP. Sebastian Vettel emerged as the victor, becoming the youngest world champion at that time.

Once more, Abu Dhabi provided a fierce title fight between Nico Rosberg and his teammate Lewis Hamilton in 2016. Rosberg eventually triumphed, securing his first and only Formula 1 World Championship.

The 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is perhaps the most dramatic and controversial race in the history of the event. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were tied in points, making the race a direct title decider. The race took a dramatic turn when a late safety car period brought Verstappen, who had fresher tires, into contention. On the restart, Verstappen overtook Hamilton in the final laps, clinching his first-ever world title in one of the most controversial finishes in Formula 1 history. This race also saw the departure of race director Michael Masi, whose decisions during the safety car period sparked significant debate.

Hamilton has been quite successful at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix throughout his career. Though his track-record is not quite as impressive as on some other tracks, the seven-time world champion could finally celebrate his titles after the season finale on six occasions. 

The most memorable title deciders at Yas Marina, however, were races in which Hamilton failed to secure the title. 2016, for example, delivered a thrilling title decider after a season long battle between Mercedes teammates Nico Rosberg and the British veteran. Rosberg executed the race to perfection, and claimed his only F1 title. 

Once more, Abu Dhabi played its part as championship decider in 2021. The safety car controversy after a crash by Nicholas Latifi led to a situation in which Hamilton had to fend off Verstappen in the final lap. The Brit had dominated the race up until that point, but was unable to pit for fresh tires under the neutralisation, something which the Red Bull driver did manage to do. In the Turn 5 hairpin, Verstappen sent it down the inside and edged away on corner exit on his fresh rubber. The Mercedes driver made a fierce attempt, but was unable to fight back and prevent the Dutchman from winning his first-ever championship.
