Ocon finished the Turkish GP without a pit stop: This driver did it before

Esteban Ocon took a big gamble with Alpine during the Turkish Grand Prix. He was the only driver to finish the entire race on the same set of tyres. It's been a while since that last happened: we have to go all the way back to the Monaco Grand Prix in 1997.
For the first time in a long time a driver finished a Formula 1 race on the same set of tyres. Ocon was brave enough to take the gamble at Istanbul Park and score a point. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc also tried to finish the race, but had to come in for a new set of intermediates in the final stage.

Back to Monaco 1997

The last time this happened was at the 1997 Monaco Grand Prix, which was rained out. The current tyre regulations were not in place yet, but drivers had to come in for refuelling. Due to slower driving and one lap less than planned, Mika Salo managed to finish the race without making a pit stop.
In the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix, although not all drivers made a pit stop either, tyres were changed then during the red flag. In 2005, it was mandatory to finish a race on the same set of tyres, but even then drivers still had to make stops to refuel.
