MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi has welcomed Max Verstappen’s decision to branch out into other categories beyond Formula 1. The four-time world champion has already taken part in several NLS (Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie) races over the past year, and is also set to compete in the Nurburgring 24 Hours Qualifiers later in May, ahead of the iconic 24 Hours of Nurburgring at the Green Hell in May.
The Dutchman was also indirectly involved in the GT World Challenge Europe last weekend, a championship in which Rossi has competed for years, as his team lined up for the season opener at Paul Ricard.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italy in France, The Doctor said that he joked about having paved the way, adding that while he does not take full credit, it is a great satisfaction to see Verstappen driving this type of car, expressing hope that they can soon share the track for a few laps together.
“I opened the door a little, I paved the way a bit,” he joked. “I’m happy, I don’t think it’s all down to me, but it’s a great satisfaction to see Verstappen driving this kind of car. I really hope I can get on track with him soon and do a couple of laps together.
“GT racing is a growing category, the cars are really enjoyable to drive and it’s a place where you still feel the essence of motorsport. The cars are fast, but they’re also heavy and difficult to drive, the racing is great, so it’s cool.”

The Verstappen.com Racing driver, competing with the Mercedes-AMG Team alongside Daniel Juncadella and Chris Lulham, ultimately brought the car home in P9 overall, but it was one daring moment that stole the spotlight.
Battling for second place on the Mistral Straight while navigating lapped traffic, Gounon launched aggressively over the kerb at full speed in a breathtaking four-wide situation. He pulled off the move against Maxime Martin, although the position was later handed back, with Porsche’s Thomas Preining eventually coming through.
