Lando Norris has received some critical advice from Juan Pablo Montoya, which could boost his title charge. He has been driving brilliantly over the past couple of races and is now just eight points behind
Oscar Piastri in the standings.
The
McLaren driver went into the 2025 season as one of the favourites for the title but has had some rocky moments, such as the crash in Canada.
Norris made a misjudgment while battling his teammate Piastri for the lead in Montreal and retired in the closing stages.
He also made a critical error in qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as Norris hit the wall in Q3. This allowed Piastri to have a clearer run to win the race for
McLaren.
Norris then took a confidence-boosting win in Austria and bounced back, beating the Australian in a straight duel later in the year. The Briton also won his home race at Silverstone, capitalising on
Piastri's Safety Car infringement.
Montoya urged Norris to focus on himself
Montoya was ruthless throughout his Formula 1 career and explained that Norris needs to ignore outside opinions.
He told BetVictor Casino: "Lando needs to focus more on himself and not what’s around him.
"He needs to forget, to a point, about Oscar and just do his own thing because I think if he does his own thing and ignore what people are saying and talking about. Do his job. Chill. Get on with it.
“I think he's been doing that. You can't be reading comments and talking to your friends who have opinions. Everybody has a freaking opinion. They need to shut up."
At the midpoint in the season, the championship ins in the balance with both Norris an Piastri blisteringly fast.
It is also expected to be an exclusive battle between the pair as their nearest rival, Max Verstappen, is 69 points off the lead.
McLaren has built a superb car, and both drivers have had superb weekends where they have outclassed the other.
The next round at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium will be a fascinating watch as the title battle rolls on.
