Juan Pablo Montoya believes the meeting between Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff in Sardinia a few days ago actually took place, with the aim of finalizing the deal. Last week, there was a lot of talk about the alleged meeting between Toto Wolff and Max Verstappen in Sardinia.
The curious coincidence of both being on the Italian island immediately sparked the imagination of the media and fans about a possible meeting between the two parties to finalize the ongoing negotiations between the Dutchman and Mercedes.
GPBlog reported that, in reality, no meeting took place between the two parties, and that their presence at the same place at the same time was actually just a coincidence.
Montoya sees Verstappen edging ever closer to Mercedes
Juan Pablo Montoya, however, holds a different opinion. Speaking on the MontoyAS podcast by W Radio Colombia, he believes that not only did the meeting take place, but that it served to give the final push to the deal.
''Max meeting with Toto was probably to sign already,'' the former
F1 driver said.
''For Max, to even reach that point in the conversation, means everything has already been seen, discussed, and decided.'' ''You know what I mean — it’s the final step. Like, “Okay, I want us to work together, let’s do it, sign here, let’s go.” I’m sure they wanted to sign face to face. They’re not going to send the first contract and do it all remotely. So I think that could be what’s happening.''
Montoya also added: ''Personally, I see Max more at Mercedes than anywhere else. And the million-dollar question is: are they really going to drop Russell? Mercedes is always trying to build the best team possible, as they’ve always done.''
The Colombian fears that the one who could end up paying the price is Kimi Antonelli, especially considering how a potential partnership with Verstappen might end up ruining his career too soon.
''I really like Antonelli, but right now he might still be lacking experience. He’s got speed, sure, but would they really risk putting him as Max’s number two, and then what? How many teammates has Max had, and how many of them have actually survived in Formula 1?''
