The 26-year-old, son of seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher, has been chasing opportunities outside F1, as well as back into F1, since losing his Haas seat at the end of 2022.
After a spell as Mercedes reserve and his current drive with Alpine in the World Endurance Championship, the German will now get a taste of America’s top single-seater series.
“I am very much looking forward to driving my first IndyCar test,” Schumacher said. “Thanks to Rahal Letterman Lanigan for the chance to drive at Indianapolis, a track with a big history where my dad also raced.
"Great to be able to see what it is all about and how difficult it is, since I hear a lot about how tough it is physically.
"It is not a secret that I am big fan of single-seater racing after all, so this first IndyCar test will be an experience to treasure, and I am very much looking forward to driving a car where I can see my wheels.”
The test was put together by RLL’s new president Jay Frye, working alongside longtime team friend Dirk Müller, according to the press release.
Team boss Bobby Rahal, himself a three-time IndyCar champion, said the occasion will be special: “I have followed Mick’s career from afar as well as that of his father so the thought of seeing him in one of our race cars is very exciting.”
"I think it’s going to be a great day for RLL and also for Mick, as he gets his first experience in an IndyCar. Obviously, he’s got a great deal of talent and knowing that we’ve had pretty good setups for the IMS road course, it should give him a good baseline to start from."
Rahal’s squad currently fields Graham Rahal, IndyCar rookie of the year Louis Foster, and Devlin DeFrancesco. Now, Schumacher steps in for a one-off run that could open the door to something bigger in 2026.
