Toto Wolff says Mercedes are considering appealing the five-second penalty handed to
Kimi Antonelli at the British Grand Prix, which denied him a ninth place finish.
Antonelli looked most likely to win the race as he was catching Charles Leclerc on much fresher tyres towards the end of the Grand Prix. That was until he
suffered damage to his tyre shield which forced him into the pits. Antonelli initially struggled to keep his car on track and was given a five-second penalty.
The race finished behind the safety car after Max Verstappen's spun into the gravel, meaning Antonelli could not build a five second gap to those behind him and he was demoted to 16th place. His failure to score any points meant that George Russell closed the gap to him in the championship to 25 points.
Speaking to the media including GPblog after the race, Mercedes team principal Wolff said the team were looking into appealing Antonelli's penalty. He said:: "So I don't know the latest, but we're definitely looking at the situation where we can avoid that penalty for track limits because he couldn't turn the car. As for the race, it is bittersweet. There's the sweet part that George, after so many days of struggle and not gelling with the car, was able to secure P2 today.
"And on the other side, Kimi, you know. That was the victory to play. He made huge steps towards Charles at the end. Personally, I didn't believe that it was possible, but my intuition was wrong, and the strategists with the data were right. And they said, "We're going to catch him six laps to the end with a huge tyre offset". Yeah, that was on the menu. But obviously, then we had the problem with the wheel shield that broke."
