Laurent Mekies has addressed growing speculation surrounding Paul Monaghan’s future at Red Bull, amid reports linking the long-serving engineer with an exit from the team. Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix weekend,
GPblog reported that
Monaghan is set to leave Red Bull for a more senior role at Cadillac. The potential departure of the chief engineer has only intensified wider rumours around the team, including speculation over
Max Verstappen’s future and even talk of a possible driver swap involving McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
However, when asked about Monaghan’s situation, Mekies remained measured, choosing not to confirm or deny the reports.
“There is a lot of rumours about the team and the team personnel. And as much as we have commented on GP, because obviously he's a very exposed engineer and he's going into an even more exposed role, I don't think it will be right for me to comment on every single rumour that comes out. If I look at the names that have been circulating in the last few months, most of them are still in the garage. Some had never wanted to leave, some have changed their mind and are staying with us,” Mekies explained to the media.

“So I don't think it will be fair for our people through the ranks that I start commenting about these guys. Paul is actually here today. He has been working very hard to get our cars out this morning, and as I said, we also made very clear that there is nothing more important to us than making sure we are in a position to keep our talents and attract the ones we need, and that remains the highest priority,” the Red Bull team boss added.
Mekies confident in Red Bull technical team
While opting against confirming the news of Monaghan’s exit, Mekies expressed confidence in the technical team at the Red Bull outfit. The 49-year-old admitted that the strength of the team is one of the most striking aspects of his 12 months at the helm since taking over as team principal.
“On that, extremely confident. I don't see you, but anyway, extremely confident. And, you know, I refer to the comment I was asked earlier: what was the most striking aspect of the first 12 months? The most striking aspect is the strength in depth that we have."
“We have incredible talent at all levels. Therefore, I will certainly not go and look for an excuse to tell you we are missing A, B or C in order to get back to ultimate competitiveness. No, no, we have everything in-house. If we need something to complete that equation, we will do it. But we are certainly not limited by the quality of the talent we have.”
