Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has explained that Max Verstappen's strong criticism of the 2026 regulations stems from his deep love for Formula 1, insisting that the Dutchman's comments are driven by a genuine desire to help improve the sport rather than any negative intent.
Fresh from securing his first podium finish of the season in Montreal, Verstappen once again found himself in the spotlight both on and off the track. The Dutchman finished third after a fierce battle with Lewis Hamilton, ultimately losing second place to the Ferrari driver in the closing stages of the race.
At the same time, Verstappen reignited speculation surrounding his Formula 1 future after speaking candidly about the growing mental strain of competing under the current conditions. His comments came at a particularly significant moment, with the FIA's previously announced "in principle" agreement over a 60/40 power split for the 2027 engine regulations no longer appearing as certain as it once did.

Mekies explains why Verstappen is so 'vocal' over 2026 regulations

Mekies stressed that Verstappen's outspoken stance on the future regulations comes from his passion for Formula 1 and his desire to see the championship remain the highest level of motorsport. According to the Red Bull team principal, the Dutchman wants drivers to be able to push flat out in qualifying and maximise the car's potential through the corners without being limited by energy management concerns or losing lap time as a result.

“Max cares about the sport, and the reason why he’s so vocal is because he genuinely cares about Formula 1 being the pinnacle of motorsport. He wants to see flat-out qualifying. He wants to see the fastest drivers being able to push as hard as they want in the corners without losing any lap time because of that.

Mekies also highlighted the positive response from the FIA, Formula 1 and the teams, noting that there has been a shared willingness to address the concerns surrounding the regulations. He believes the collaborative approach taken by all stakeholders has been encouraging for Verstappen and the wider paddock, while ultimately benefiting the sport as a whole.
“He has been listened to. There has been a fantastic openness from the stakeholders, from the FIA, from Formula 1 and from all the teams to acknowledge that something needs to be done. I’m sure it has been encouraging for him, and for all of us, to see that everyone is ready to take steps to address it. I think that’s important for the sport.”

Verstappen urged to make final call on F1 future: 'He needs to make up his mind'

Speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Schumacher argued that Verstappen and Red Bull would both benefit from greater clarity over the Dutchman's long-term future, suggesting the ongoing speculation is becoming a distraction for everyone involved.
According to Schumacher, Verstappen's public comments have often sent mixed signals, at times expressing satisfaction with his situation and commitment to the future, while on other occasions raising concerns about whether he is still enjoying Formula 1 under the current circumstances. The former Formula 1 driver therefore believes a definitive decision would allow both Verstappen and Red Bull to put the uncertainty behind them and focus entirely on the years ahead.

“One day he says he’ll be driving in 2027, that everything is fine and that he feels comfortable. The next day he says that if things continue like this, he could start losing his enjoyment again. It’s all a bit complicated. At some point, he needs to make up his mind, and the whole team has to focus on looking forward.”
