McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has revealed that from the Miami Grand Prix onwards, a heavily revised MCL40 will debut on track. McLaren, coming off a title double in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships, have endured a difficult start to the season under the new regulations, completing limited running and even suffering a double DNS in China.
A first turning point, however, already arrived in Suzuka, where Piastri fought for victory for much of the race before eventually finishing second behind Antonelli.
Speaking to GPblog among other media, Stella revealed that from Miami onwards, a significantly revised MCL40 will be seen on track, expressing confidence in the development work carried out behind the scenes and suggesting the car should become more competitive in both Miami and Canada, especially after the encouraging performance already shown in Japan.
"In our intent, there was always the idea to deliver a completely new car, especially from an aerodynamic upgrades point of view, for the North American races. So, we could keep up with this plan. Obviously, the fact that the calendar has been changed, sort of helped a little bit like I'm sure helped all the other teams that could work more streamlined towards upgrading the car rather than being busy with racing."
While he confirmed that an all-new MCL40 will be rolled out across Miami and Canada, he also warned that most rivals are expected to bring similar upgrades, meaning it may not trigger a major shake-up in the order but rather highlight which team has made the biggest step forward in the same timeframe.
"I could say overall that across Miami and Canada we will see an entirely new MCL40. Again, I would like to stress that this is what I would expect of most of our competitors. So not necessarily is going to be a shift in the packing order. It will be effectively just a check who has been able to add more performance within the same time frame. And we also have some performance to recover if we look at Mercedes and to some extent Ferrari as well.
"We are quite happy with the development that we've been able to manage in background, so hopefully we should be able to see a slightly more competitive MCL40 in Miami and then in Canada, considering that the last race was already a decent competitive performance in Japan. So we definitely look forward to the next races."
Stella shuts down Ferrari return speculation for 2028
A rumour that emerged during the April break followed the news of Gianpiero Lambiase’s departure from Red Bull, with Stella tipped for a potential return to Ferrari as team principal.
Responding to the speculation in a recent interview with McLaren’s website,
the Italian dismissed the claims with a light-hearted tone, suggesting he found the rumours amusing, including those about huge salaries and supposed pre-agreements. He also hinted that the so-called “silly season” had arrived earlier than usual, adding that he is now used to this kind of speculation and takes it in stride.
Using a playful metaphor, he compared the rumours to someone trying to spoil a well-prepared dessert, stressing that within McLaren they are perfectly capable of recognising what is genuine and what is not.
