Max Verstappen celebrates his 100th race with Red Bull Racing this weekend. It all started in Barcelona, with a victory after a crash between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. 100 races later and the Dutchman is in a title fight with Hamilton. Helmut Marko has seen Verstappen grow at Red Bull from day one.
"That first win was of course only possible because of the Mercedes crash, but the way he kept Raikkonen behind him was sensational. There you saw all his potential," Marko explained in conversation with Krone Zeitung.
"He has developed enormously. He's always on the limit, has incredible car control and drives spectacularly."
First championship year for Verstappen
For Verstappen, this year is the first year as a contender for the championship. Marko, therefore, expects the Dutchman to learn a lot this season. "On the one hand you have the confident, experienced and tactically strong Hamilton and on the other you have the young and sometimes impetuous Max ."

At Red Bull they have taken over a number of key personnel from Mercedes in recent weeks. This has led to tensions between the teams and Toto Wolff has already spoken out about it on several occasions. However, Marko let it be known that his goal is not to irritate Mercedes. “Our goal is not to annoy Toto, we want to win the championship,” Marko concluded.
