Helmut Marko has demanded the RB14 to be both fast and reliable from now on, as Daniel Ricciardo lost power and retired two laps into the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Red Bull was tipped for a victory in Sakhir, but those dreams were quickly erased as both Red Bulls were out of the race after a mere five laps. Daniel Ricciardo just lost power suddenly during the second lap of the race, which was very frustrating for the team and for the Aussie in particular, who was hungry to perform well.
In that same lap, Max Verstappen bumped into Lewis Hamilton's side, puncturing his left rear tyre and eventually forcing him to retire three laps later. In this case, the blame wasn't laid on Red Bull but on the aggressiveness of Verstappen.
“The problem of Ricciardo is it is not the first time it’s happened,” Marko told Motorsport.com
"What can you do when a technical issue just stops you completely?
"As for Max, we got very unlucky, he got a heavy hit that broke the wheel and damaged the diff."
Red Bull's long-run pace has been excellent, but the team hasn't been able to show it, as last race in Australia there was no room for any overtaking, and this week they both retired so early. The qualifying pace still needs to improve, as does the reliability.
“First we have to sort out our qualifying, but we need a fast and reliable engine."
Team principal Christian Horner added that his drivers told him that they were very happy with the car's pace in the few laps they drove, as Ricciardo was able to close on Raikkonen and Verstappen was able to make a charge on Lewis Hamilton (even though it ended badly).
