Macau GP winner: "Sim racing is fun, but it's not entirely realistic"

Next season he would be driving in Formula 3 for his second year at MP Motorsport, but because of the coronavirus it is still unclear when he will be able to get back in the car. Last year Richard Verschoor won the pearl of the Formula 3 season, being the Macau Grand Prix, and had hoped to actually be able to fight at the top next season. Now he is awaiting when he can race again.

It is now difficult for drivers to stay motivated, Verschoor also notes. "In the beginning I found it difficult to stay fit - I had less motivation - but now I'm doing fine," he tells Motorsport.com. "We now also have more visibility and clarity about when we might start driving again, which is very motivating."

Last year Verschoor finished with a victory on Macau's legendary circuit. He had hoped to extend the strong form he showed at the end of the year to 2020. He regrets the fact that racing is now at a standstill for so long. "It's a shame, but it's the same for everyone. I see that the team and I still have a lot of confidence from the victory in Macau."

Yet Verschoor didn't completely take his hands off the wheel. Like many other drivers he found his way in sim racing. "Everybody's doing it these days. It's nice to stay in rhythm like that. In the end, real racing is very different work. It's not quite realistic. You see, some drivers almost become robots. That's good for when you're simming, but there's a lot more feeling involved in real racing", concludes Verschoor.
