Charles Leclerc has opened up on the criticism he has received during his difficult 2026 season, and insisted that he has not become a "bad driver" following his return to form at Silverstone. The
Ferrari driver suffered a tough run of form between Miami and Austria scoring just 20 points across five races with notable crashes in Miami, Monaco and Barcelona. He returned to form at the British Grand Prix, taking his first win since the 2024 United States Grand Prix, though questions have been raised whether he will need to
play team orders and back Lewis Hamilton in the title fight this season.
Leclerc was heavily criticised on social media during his bad run of form and he addressed the narratives behind his slump while speaking after his victory at Silverstone.
Leclerc on cancelling the noise
Speaking to the media after the British Grand Prix, Leclerc insisted that the criticism did not fuel him and that he tried to "cancel the noise as much as possible" by not looking at his phone and focusing on what is relevant.
"Things are said and you go from hero to zero, from zero to hero, in like two days in this sport, and so it can influence then the way you see a situation. So no, my job was really to just try and cancel that noise, to not look at anything, to not listen to anything. And I know that I didn't become a bad driver from one day to the other. It was just a matter of finding that feeling with the car. These cars are very specific, are very different to the way we've been driving since we started racing, and so it takes a bit more time to get used to it.
"I was very strong for the first part of the season, then I lost a bit of feeling with the car. We changed quite a few things with the car and it took a bit more time than what I had wished to get back to the level I wanted. And on top of that, we've had some issues on the Sunday that cost me quite a lot of points. So altogether, it wasn't a nice situation to be in, but I'm very happy to get out of this situation in this way. However, as I said, it's still the beginning. It's only one race and I must not get carried away thinking that the war is over."
Leclerc can be "great asset" for Hamilton
Speaking on Formula1.com, ex-Formula One driver Jolyon Palmer stated Leclerc is not a championship challenger, but can become an asset for Ferrari in Hamilton's fight for the drivers' championship - despite his win in Silverstone.
He said: "I still maintain that Charles is too far back in the championship to mount a title challenge, but you never know, and having him back on his best form can only be a great asset to his team and particularly Lewis Hamilton in his own fight."
Palmer's comments have also been supported by the likes of Jacques Villeneuve and former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley, who both stated that the Scuderia should prioritise Hamilton in the title fight immediately.
