As a Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson did what he never could as a Red Bull Racing driver: beat Max Verstappen. And he did at the Austrian Grand Prix, at the Red Bull Ring of all places. It was a sight to behold. As Max Verstappen's last push lap in Q3 had to be aborted due to a yellow flag triggered by Pierre Gasly's main straight spin, the qualifying classification revealed the Dutchman placed behind his former teammate.
A savoury revenge for the young New Zealander whose tenure at Red Bull came to an end after only two Grand Prix? He replied to GPblog's question at the Red Bull Ring: "It's not revenge, no. I haven't really raced him at all."
According to Lawson, both drivers are currently in different leagues due to one of them being in a championship winning team and the other one in a midfield outfit.
Lawson knows his race tomorrow is not against Verstappen
"It's a good position obviously. We maximised today but I obviously don't expect to be racing him tomorrow and some of the guys around us," clarified Lawson.
For the New Zealander, the challenge will come from behind. "But some of the guys behind for sure we're going to be trying to keep that [position]."
Lawson couldn't have done it alone
After his rather premature departure from Red Bull Racing, Lawson had to adjust to a new car, Racing Bulls' VCARB02. After 8 rounds the team have finally succeeded in their effforts to make the New Zealander feel at home, and the result today shows it.
"It doesn't feel bad. But, yeah, it's obviously a cool feeling. It's just for me [I'm] more proud of the team for a lot of hard work, recently, especially. And a lot of work around my side to make me more comfortable in the car and help things suit me, and I think today reflected that."
