Lando Norris was mistakenly labeled as the 2025 World Champion ahead of the decisive Abu Dhabi round. Fans on social media noticed that the
Formula 1 app had mistakenly listed the
McLaren driver as already being World Champion in the career stats section — an error that was quickly corrected shortly after.
The Brit still has a strong chance of claiming his first career title this weekend at Yas Marina, holding a solid points advantage over Max Verstappen, who last weekend secured second place solo, ahead of Oscar Piastri.
The Dutchman capitalized on a major strategic error by McLaren, taking the race win while his title rival finished fourth, cutting the championship gap to just 12 points.
Piastri, on the other hand, faces a tougher challenge. With 16 points to make up, he will need both his teammate and Verstappen to falter if he hopes to claim the title.
All scenarios that would crown Norris-Verstappen-Piastri champions in Abu Dhabi
The Drivers’ Championship is once again coming down to three contenders in the final race — a scenario not seen since 2010, also at Yas Marina, when four drivers were in the hunt: Fernando Alonso, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, and Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren.
This time, it’s Norris who must contend with both Verstappen and his teammate. While he starts the weekend as the favorite on paper looking at the standings, the risk of a costly mistake is always looming.
